Below is a quick review of Courtney Love’s gig in Melbourne on 16th August 2014. Written on 17th August.
Courtney Love: “You Know My Name” Australian Tour
Last night Courtney Love performed to an extremely enthusiastic Melbourne crowd. Held at Festival Hall, it was her third concert in Australia, and her first Australian tour since 1999, when she fronted the band Hole.
Though the numbers had diminished fifteen years later, so too had the attending critics. Instead, the numbers on Saturday night contained fans; and it was all about Courtney Love and her music.
Courtney Love’s highly anticipated gig did not leave fans disappointed. Love delivered an intensive 90 minute set, with light-hearted banter in between songs. Love smiled all the way through the gig. So did the audience. With her classic foot-on-the-monitor rock pose, Love effortlessly belted out song after song. Together with her new material, Wedding Day and You Know My Name, Love covered Fleetwood Mac’s Gold Dust Woman and The Crystals’ He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss), as well as Hole hits, Miss World, Violet, Celebrity Skin, Olympia, Pretty on the Inside, Malibu, and Doll Parts.
Touring with Love, is her hand-picked band consisting of Shawn Dailey (Rock Kills Kid, Hole), Robin Diaz (Daughtry), Micko Larkin (Larrikin Love, Hole), and Ginger Wildheart (The Wildhearts). Talented in their own right, together they rocked, and the group dynamics with Love were smooth and seamless.
A brilliant gig. If a critic were in the audience on Saturday night, they would at least have to acknowledge Love’s talent as singer, songwriter, and performer.
