Seeing a band twice in two weeks makes you realise how important the night you see them is.
A quick comparison of ASH on the 22nd August and the 29th August.
Similarities:
Both nights were at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne.
Both nights were sold out.
Both nights the band was great.
Both nights were fantastic fun.
However, the differences are what makes the 22nd August memorable.
On 22nd August, there was more crowd interaction and more between song banter. The audience were revved up. They were participating. Singing all of the songs and all the lyrics, not just the chorus of the one or two songs they’d heard from their older sibling’s (or parent’s) CD collection – yes, it was a much younger crowd on the 29th and it was felt.
The 22nd August crowd had grown up with the band. They had matured, developed, grown. They were children of 1977 themselves.
Reminiscing – the first time I heard ASH it was Jack Names The Planets in 1994. Loved it immediately. Along with Nirvana, Mudhoney, Pulp and Lush, the album Trailer was on regular rotation at my place -and on the Lizard Lounge dancefloor.
I haven’t been disappointed with any of their subsequent releases nor with any of their LIVE gigs. I guess I’m a just a child of ’77 as well.
“Jack Names The Planets” Lyrics:
We were walking, walking in two worlds
In the gardens of sunlight home
Bad children on the phone
Withheld me to withhold you
Said I’d kiss you if you want
You’ve got things back to front
I got a letter, I sent it back
I didn’t like It, what you had
Jack names the planets after you
When I turned you had gone away
So I didn’t skip upon that day
Morose feeling, small mind
Don’t touch it’s face you might like it’s kind
Said I’d kiss you if you want
You’ve got things back to front
Don’t mind your spelling, it ain’t so bad
Things like that they never made me quite so mad as you
Jack names the planets after you
I wish you’d come back everythings ready for you
You are welcome if you plan to
You can come walking and you know where
You’ve got understand that you got to care
Said I’d kiss you if you want
You’ve got things back to front
My mother’s dying I’ve got to go home
But there’s more you wont be solely on your own
Jack names the planets after you
I’ll post pictorial comparison at a later stage …
